The first step is that you need to define the definition for yourself.
Most people strive for success based on what others define it as.
It is also important to note that this definition can and should change over time.
What is it that you want to do?
How do you want to do it?
Who do you want to do it with?
Who do you want to do it for ? (It is ok to say yourself!)
Success also means understanding the principles of sacrifice.
This is not so much the time and hard work side of things but the Yes means No conundrum.
If you say yes to something you then have less time so you will have to say no to something else.
It is important to understand this principle as there may be tasks or events that you should not or don’t want to do and in such, never say yes to them because at that moment in time you had the time. This time-trade principle always applies.
This is really difficult to master. The one thing that keeps messing up this trade off is money!
If money is important to you (I don’t know maybe it isn’t?) you don’t have to say no to money – you have to say no to the wrong money!
How many times have you taken a gig because the money seemed good?
I have – and 9 times out of 10 it wasn’t! You see it’s not the actual value in Dollar terms but rather what are the time costs?
I recently spoke at an event in another city! I had to decide if the fee to speak was worth the direct and indirect costs as well as the opportunity (Yes – No tradeoff) before accepting the gig.
If I look back at it now, I am not sure if it was. This is me being honest with myself and you.
This is why I am writing today’s post. You need to constantly define what success looks like and then chase it.
As I said there is no correct answer – there is only the one that makes sense to you.
