We all know that we have to delegate tasks or get people to do things that we either don’t want to do, don’t have the time to do, or if you’ve been reading any of my previous posts shouldn’t be doing.
However the problem for most people is that delegation stops at the point of telling or asking someone to do something.
The success comes when you delegate clearly and concisely.
If someone is asked to do something the job actually lives with you to clearly define that which they need to do.
It doesn’t stop there however. You see it’s one thing to ask someone to do something, the most important part however, is to give them the right tools to do it with. You also need to define the outcome and you need to show them what a successful delivery looks like.
A part missing for most people is trust. Can you allow them to do the something? You’ve told them what that something should look like when it’s done and most importantly you’ve given them the correct tools or products, so they have what they might need to do the task.
But do you trust them to do it?
Can you show the person that you’re delegating to that you really do trust them to deliver and put aside the thinking that there is a chance they will let you down?
If you have been delegated to and you know that the person trusts you to do the best that you can do. You don’t want to let that person down so you will give it all you have to make sure that you succeed. This trait applies to how your customers view you and value that which you and your team provides to them too.
Trust, the right tools and clearly defined outcomes are the recipe to making sure that people know what is expected of them and are able to do it and most important of all know that you have faith in them to deliver.
